Extraordinary Love Extraordinary Gift
A person who loves much, gives much. This is evident in our Gospel reading for this week. Mary had come to love and honour Jesus. She wanted to express this great love, so she took the most expensive perfume she had and came and wiped Jesus feet with it. The fragrance filled the room. Everybody was fully aware of Mary’s action.
But as so often happens when someone gives an extravagant gift, someone complains. “It should have been sold and shared with the poor”. How often don’t we hear that line! Someone is always thinking of how some beautiful loving act could have been done differently, and more people benefit and it gets shared around.
But Jesus recognises this comment for what it is. A cover for self centeredness. There really is not a concern for the poor. These same people with the same perfume would have probably sold it and used it on themselves.
So the question we are left with is; is love motivating our actions? Extraordinary love gives extraordinary gifts. We ask that the Holy Spirit will give us a heart that loves in that extraordinary way.
