“I am the Lord your God you shall have no other gods beside me”
What does this mean?
We are to fear, love and trust in God above everything else. (Luther’s Small Catechism.)
In the story of Thomas, called the twin, we hear him declare his faith when his fear, grief and loss, are ended by the appearance of the still wounded but resurrected Lord: “My Lord and my God.” He enters into the conversation of faith that will continue throughout his life. A faith conversation that will continue to express itself in fear, love and trust in God.
The Story of Thomas our twin teaches us about faith:
- that trusts despite our inability to see
- that enables us to find hope in the dark places of our lives
- that has its beginning, middle and end in the love God has for us.
- that encounters not a judgmental God but a wounded and forgiving God.
- that God who encounters me, a sinner, with grace and forgiveness wants to engage with others, through me, with that same grace.
