In John 14, Jesus asked Philip, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?” It is a difficult to grasp that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are seen in each other. The Catechism of the Catholic Church declares: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. (234)
The Irish use a shamrock with three separate leaves on the same stem to illustrate the mystery of the Trinity. Others use a triangle; three equal lines connected together to form a single shape. Another illustration of the Holy Trinity is that of a marriage unit: a husband and wife and a child. Every time we look at a husband, we think of his wife and every time we see the wife we think of her husband, when we see the child, we think of the husband and the wife. The husband and wife and child are all separate people but they each love the other. God loves his son Jesus, Jesus loves his Father, and the Holy Spirit loves the Father and the Son. This is indeed a mystery. 1 Timothy 3:9 says “Hold onto the mystery of faith”
