The word ‘mission’ has been secularized. Not only churches but government bodies like Centrelink have mission statements. You see, everyone has a mission. What is the mission of your church? What is the mission of your life? Do you have a clearly defined mission you pursue, a guiding star that directs your path every day? In theory, yes, I assume, but in practice?
All the time we bump into concrete walls, dead ends, stop signs and we easily feel defeated and give up…and have another glass of red wine, or take a pill. We feel our bondage, our weakness, at times feeling caught in some cage – like that poor little marsupial I caught this week in a possum trap. The poor little thing couldn’t get out. Often we have high ideals, yet falter at the first hurdle and really feel trapped.
Sin is a trap. Marriage can be a trap. Your job can be a trap. Your genes can be a trap. Your frailties and diseases can be the cage that limits you continually. But here comes that momentous message: JESUS HAS SET YOU FREE! (“If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed”, John 8:36)
Too good to be true? Let’s explore this further in today’s Service.
