Renew Mission Life – 3 Setting our sails to catch the wind
At Pentecost the Holy Spirit came with the sound of a mighty wind and with tongues of fire. And Jesus’ first disciples were filled with the Spirit, and proclaimed Jesus with boldness, with power. Could we say that the same Holy Spirit is just as powerful in our time? The Holy Spirit is often called the third person of the Trinity, the one who makes Jesus known, who makes Jesus present in the world, who continues to empower disciples in their being sent into that world where God already is. Pray and look for the nudge of the Spirit in your life. The Spirit sometimes brings comfort and sometimes discomfit, especially when we need to be stretched wider, further. Our time needs Spirit-filled Christians bringing the love of God wherever they are blown. Tell some Holy Spirit stories.
Renew Mission Life -2. Meeting Jesus at the margins
In Jesus’ time, Jerusalem with its temple was the centre of Jewish social, political, and religious life. It was where you expected to experience God. But Jerusalem wasn’t where Jesus based himself. Many of the stories told in the four Gospel accounts are set on journeys to or from Jerusalem – journeys from Galilee, on the outskirts of Israel. Galilee represented the confronting edge, the chaotic edge, the uncontrollable edge of Israelite life.
It was in Galilee that Jesus’ ministry began. And after his resurrection, it was Galilee where he met his disciples: “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me” (Matt 28:10).
Jesus’ followers weren’t sent out from Jerusalem to carry the teachings of their master to the darkness of Galilee. It was in Galilee, on the fringes, where they were invited to meet Jesus. As followers of Jesus today, we’re not obliged to carry Jesus’ word, or perform great acts on his behalf. We’re invited to meet God on the fringes, and participate in what God’s up to in the world!
