Jesus sets his face to Jerusalem, to the cross, and he asks his followers, us, to journey with him. But, this is to be no ordinary amble through the countryside. We are asked to leave everything and everyone, and to set our faces also on the road to Jerusalem, to the cross. Like James and John, however, we prefer to practice a bit of triumphalism, rather than the lonely, humble way of Jesus. We prefer a superhero God, rather than a lonely, homeless Christ. If we feel under attack, our natural impulse is to join the fight. But Jesus says to us, “Move on. Follow me to the cross.” As we follow Jesus to Calvary, we will learn the ways of humility and service, the attributes of love that Jesus gives us, his nomads, here on earth.
