The Bible writers had no idea of the expanse of God’s great
oceans. If only they could have seen a globe of the world, with
70% covered by oceans. The Israelites were not a seafaring
people and saw sea more as a place of chaos that needed to be
reigned in by God.
We know the oceans to be very important in the ecology of the
world, like for the provision of rain that waters crops, and for
cooling the earth. We know the oceans to be teeming with life
which blesses many with food, and so much enjoyment. We also
sadly know that the oceans are getting more polluted, especially
with plastics and other junk, badly effecting marine life. Lord,
have mercy. We are aware that God has called us to be partners
in stewarding the earth, including the oceans. What can we all do
to bless and safeguard the oceans?
Lord, give courage for the care of your wonderful oceans. Lord,
give safety to all who sail on the ocean, or fly over it. Lord, thanks
again for you amazing creation; the wide vast oceans that remind
us finite people of our humanity, and you being God. Amen.
