What does it mean to follow Jesus?
(Luke 5:1-11)
When we think about following Jesus sometimes it feels like there’s just more things that Jesus wants us to do. We can feel like Simon: when Jesus asks him to take his boat out to the deep water and let his nets down, he says “we’ve been fishing hard all night, and you want us to go out again?!?”
But the good news we hear this week is that following Jesus isn’t about us having to do more religious activity, but it’s about allowing Jesus to be part of everything we do. Life with Jesus isn’t about our obedience, but about Jesus’ promise: “Do not be afraid … I will be with you always”. (Matt 28)
When we allow Jesus to be a part of everything we do, we become people who bring life to others. We begin to notice all these little ways where God is at work around us, and ways we can share this love in every aspect of our lives. That’s what it means to be “fishers of people.”
