As children we dream of finding treasure. We dig in our back yard or we search on the beach. We search with friends and we search alone. Often just to be disappointed.
Jesus tells us in Luke 12:34 that we all have treasure. It is where ever our heart is. By this Jesus means it is whatever our heart focuses on. And he hints there is really only two places that our hearts focus; on earth or in heaven. The things we focus on here on earth include money, property, sport, food, recreation, achievements, knowledge, and family. Things in heaven are the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and our relationship with God.
Jesus says our treasure in heaven is secure, whereas the treasures of earth will pass away. Financial markets collapse. Property gets old and worn out. Sports achievements last for a moment. Foods go stale. Recreational experiences are fleeting. Achievements dwindle in importance. Knowledge changes. Family members grow up and move away or die. Jesus calls us to focus on our heavenly treasure, from there no thief steals, and no rust can destroy that treasure. So focus on where true treasure is to be found?
